Artist Statement

My name is Tyler Austin. I have been watching movies when I was three years old and I always wanted to become a director ever since. When I was five years old I have been making videos with my old video camera. My favorite tool is a video camera because I can capture art that is in motion. My favorite material is paper because I can write rough drafts for film scripts. What I like best about what I do is that I can have fun while making videos and then watching other people’s reactions from my videos.  My goal as a director is to show satire of our culture while entertaining the audience. I always like making my videos realistic but every once in a while I want to make a throwback to the old 70s and 80s exploitation flicks. I usually make videos in my free time with my friends. I always wrote the story for the videos and directed it. A lot of my ideas for the videos were excellent (ex. A Vietnam movie that is in the point of view of the Vietcong instead of the American soldiers) and some goofy, but fun ideas (ex. A guy at a Renaissance festival goes insane and dresses up as a knight and goes on a killing spree). I would be an excellent choice to be in your film school because I’m always dedicated to my work and I to go beyond the norm of most filmmakers.

1.) When I work with video I am reminded that there is going to be a lot of fun, hard work.
2.) I begin a piece by filming the most difficult part of the script.
3.) I know a piece is done when I filmed everything that was in the script.
4.) When my work is going well, I am filled with a sense of joy.
5.) When people see my work, I'd like them to be entertained.
